Woolnough uses a special embroidery technique that involves a domestic sewing machine and a base cloth that dissolves in water after the piece is complete leaving just the skeleton. In a way, her process also mimics the natural process of leaves dying and drying up which, in turn, become the subject of her work.
In 2012, we launched Adorn, our first collection of jewellery. The range translated the gem-like quality of our lights into something which could decorate the body - instead of the home.
“From a distance at night,” David says, “our lights can appear like sparkling jewels. So here they are in miniature.”
The collection is made here in New Zealand and hand finished twelve kilometres from our studio. Packaged in beautiful wooden boxes, these cast-silver treasures are hall-marked, making them precious works of art to enjoy for years to come.
Our Wing light explores the Greek myth of Icarus, about the boy who flew too close to the sun; our Wing earrings translate its dramatic form into an eloquently sensual piece. Hall-marked cast silver, the earrings - indeed the whole Adorn collection - aspire to be timeless jewels to treasure forever.
There might still be tools on the table, but we think this home in Melbourne will be all the more special with its new arrivals: David Trubridge’s Reed lights. As you can see, their elongated form is a natural fit for spaces with deliciously high ceilings. We make them in our workshop in New Zealand utilising our small team’s skilled expertise and craftsmanship.
This bamboo light by David Trubridge is a Basket of Knowledge. It is inspired by the Maori creation myth where the gods gave humans three baskets of exactly that - knowledge - to help them instil balance between the natural, spiritual and rational worlds. This is an impressive assembled feature light that makes a statement in any space.
David created Body Raft in 2001. It was the beginning of a new era in the business, with Cappellini purchasing the international design rights to the piece as well as igniting a global interest in David’s work.
